Examples of popular collectable Cinderella Stamps include the labels printed to pay for private transportation of mail and parcels by rail, sea or air. Another important area of Cinderella stamp collecting is so called Local Stamps. A great many local stamps are produced to perform a genuine postal function where the national postal service is lacking although many other local stamps are produced simply as souvenirs or collectables with no real working purpose.

In Great Britain many local stamps are issued by offshore islands, which in some cases, have a genuine use to pay for transporting mail to the mainland by boat. These covers usually require the labels to be placed on the reverse of the envelope leaving space for the Royal Mail stamp needed to pay for the onward delivery of the item. UK islands that issue such labels have included Lundy Island, the Summer Isles and the Calf of Man.

While many cinderella stamps are very common, those privately produced in limited numbers can be little-known and rare. Cinderella stamps are not usually listed in the main stamp collecting catalogues. It should be noted, however, that Revenue stamps are today a recognised competitive category within the FIP (Fédération Internationale de Philatélie) and have their own Commissioner, unlike other types of cinderella stamps.
