Unissued Royal Mail World Cup Stamp Design Surfaces
The forgotten designs were the work of David Gentleman one of the most prolific stamp designers in the UK. It is believed that David Gentleman prepared the designs in 1970 following the hastily produced "England Winners" overprint stamp issued for England's success in the World Cup four years before. The overprint utilised the lowest value design from the popular stamp set issued earlier that year to commemorate England hosting of the World Cup.

In a press release issued by the BPMA Jennifer Flippance, exhibition manager for the London 2010: Festival of Stamps, is quoted saying: "Royal Mail was obviously determined to be more prepared in 1970 which is why it commissioned designer David Gentleman. It's only a shame that England didn't experience the same victory in 1970 and that the stamp designs were filed away and forgotten".
All the original artwork for the 1966 World Cup stamps and the previously unseen 1970 stamp designs are now held by the BPMA and they represent a fascinating insight in to the Royal Mail's new stamp design and approval process. Anyone wishing to see the artwork designs can visit The British Postal Museum and Archive.
