The New Stanley Gibbons Congress Cup

The Signing Ceremony took place on Friday 23 July at Leamington Spa Town Hall, with more than 100 philatelists and guests in the Victorian hall, including the Town Mayor, Cllr. Robert Cunliffe.

Amongst the treats on offer during the four-day event were several static displays on a number of interesting subjects including ‘The Nairn Overland Mail Service’, ‘The Travelling Post Offices of Great Britain’, and a very light-hearted display on the colourful character of ‘George Allen Higlett’.

Throughout Congress, ten speakers presented papers to the cream of the philatelic community in a bid to win the impressive Stanley Gibbons Cup.

Topics included ‘King George V issues of the Union of South Africa’, by Brian Trotter RDP, FRPSL and ‘Bertram Mackennal: stamps, coins and medals of King George V’, courtesy of Douglas Muir FRPSL.

However it was Dr Andrew Dove’s display and paper on the King George Definitive Stamps of New Zealand that claimed the Stanley Gibbons Cup for 2010.

Dr Dove’s name will be the first to grace the trophy, which will be presented annually for the best paper at Congress, but a second smaller cup will be his to keep.

Dr Dove’s winning paper has been an ongoing work, having made its debut at Stampex in 1980. The initial paper was subsequently refined for talks over the years at various stamp clubs and society meetings, before being presented in its current format at the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain 2010 at the invitation of the organisers.

‘This was my first visit to Congress,’ said Dr Dove, ‘and the first time I have presented the paper using PowerPoint! It has been a fantastic opportunity to speak with and learn from the eminent collectors in attendance. I am very proud but have no doubt that my work on the Definitive Stamps of New Zealand will continue to develop.’
