Stanley Gibbons Announce Sale of Rare 1904 GB Official Overprint Stamp
The stamp was put on display by Stanley Gibbons’ during the London 2010 International Stamp Exhibition held at The Business Design Centre where it drew huge interest from collectors throughout the week of the event.
The stamp was issued on 14 March 1904 and the Edward VII 6d purple overprinted I.R. Official gained the reputation of being "Britain's rarest stamp" because it was withdrawn by the Post Office almost immediately it was issued. It is believed that only 19 sheets of the stamp were ever produced (a tiny amount) and, because of the withdrawal when all official overprints were cesed, almost all the sheets were destroyed.
The stamp has now been purchased from Stanley Gibbons by a private collector who we understand wishes to remain anonymous. In a press release we received from Stanley Gibbons today the deal is said to have been worth over £400,000.
Stanley Gibbons Investment Director, Keith Heddle, has said; "The 6d I.R. Official is one of the most sought after stamps in the world. Understandably our client is thrilled to own such a unique and coveted piece."
