GB Postage Due Stamps 1914 to 1994
Additional postage charges were usually levied on postal items that had insufficient or even no postage paid when sending. To formalise the collection process the first Postage Due stamps were issued in 1914 and these were applied to postal items to indicate clearly the amount of additional payment that was required from receivers. They were also began being used in large blocks for the purpose of collecting other forms of payments due to the authorities such as import duties on mailings from abroad.
As the monarch's profile was not used the front design of Britain's Postage Due stamps went largely unchanged until Britain's currency underwent decimalisation although new issues using new watermarks being released during the reign of every monarch from King george V onwards.
The final issue of GB Postage Due Stamps came in 1994 when it was decided it was more efficient to return to handstamped charge marks and collectors should note the short lifespan of the final Postage Due stamps issued on 15th February 1994. Fine commercially used examples of these stamps are already very hard to find and can merit a premium in value over their mint equivalents.
In my experience it is becoming increasingly difficult to find examples of mail bearing commercially used GB Postage Due stamps from any reign and I therefore regularly scan the online GB postage due stamp auctions looking for interesting covers.
